…and we’re back

Well it’s been a minute, huh? In lieu of a lame apology please accept this amazing video as recompense for my absence.

February means Fashion Week in my world and, as always, it makes for the two busiest times at my job. Once again, we partnered with the ultra-talented Zang Toi to create the beautiful runway look for his Fall 2012 Collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. The amazing Rudy Miles and his unrivaled Beauty by Rudy team, put a modern twist on Hollywood Glam to complement the striking, cinematic-inspired collection. I’ll have more snapshots from my trip coming this week…

More Beauty Solutions!

Today, I shared two great tips on AmazingCosmetics’ fabulous blog, AmazingLand, on how to rock lower-lash mascara without making a greasy, black mascara mess. Check out my post below!

Holiday Beauty Solutions 8 & 9: Luscious Lower Lashes

#8:  The 60′s are back in a big way and one of our favorite beauty trends from this era is bottom lash mascara. Frequently rocked by Blake Lively and practically trademarked by Kim Kardashian, this technique was originally made famous by Twiggy back in the 60′s and is still a great way to add drama to your eyes… but there’s a fine line between bottom lash mascara and an unruly black streak. In order to keep from looking like your ready to hit the football field, try this trick I picked up from Michele Phan. Take an index card and place it under your eye, lifting your eyelashes away from the skin, and apply the mascara to the lashes on the card. Now you can go mascara-crazy down there and no one will ever mistake your Twiggy for Tebow! If you want to get extra fancy, cut the end of the index card into a slight crescent shape (ala the curve of your under eye) to get a better contoured fit.

#9 If you are planning on wearing mascara on your bottom lashes, do the bottoms first! It may seem out of order, but in order to apply mascara to the bottom lashes, most of us have to look upwards. If you do this after you’ve applied mascara to the top lashes, your lashes will touch your lid and leave a smudge. It’s a super simple tip that has changed our mascara-wearing lives.

There you have it- two quick fixes for giving you lashes to lust over!

Holiday beauty tips!

Everyday in December, I am blogging a new Beauty Solution tip from AmazingCosmetics. So throughout the month I’ll be tossing some my favorites in here for all of you to check out too!

This weekend I posted a new tip that I picked up from my little sister over Thanksgiving, and I’m obsessing over it. As soon as this manicure wears off, I’ll be sure to try it out first hand and share with you all. So check out my beauty solution post from AmazingCosmetics fabulous beauty blog, AmazingLand

Holiday Makeup Tip #3

Saturday is my day to do all the little things I don’t have time for during the week, like making breakfast, reading my favorite fashion mags and painting my nails. So in honor of my saturday rituals today’s tip is all about nailpolish: How to polish your nails perfectly, in a hurry.

Even though I don’t have time to paint my nails during the week, I love to coordinate my nail polish to my outfits and going out with chipped nails is one of my biggest pet peeves. So, I often find myself doing quickie polish jobs before mid-week events. A last minute attempt that usually ends with just as much polish on my fingers as my nails. Until now!

To paint your nails in a hurry without getting a drop on your cuticles, simply start with chapstick! Apply a coat of chapstick on the skin surrounding your nail bed before you start to paint. The chapstick will keep any excess polish from soaking into the skin and your fabulous nail color will stay where it belongs. On your nails. Your cuticles will stay clean and your hands will look, well… polished!

……

Let me know if there’s a beauty question that’s been bugging you or a pesky problem you’d love a solution for. I’ll make sure to answer it for you in one of my posts this month <3

5 things

makeup free and ready for my close up... here goes nothing.

Today at work, we’re recording a series of video tutorials for SephoraTV and our website. We’re going for something a la Chanel and guess who gets to star in them??? This kid! I just love getting to try new things at work. Here’s 5 things I’ve learned in my day as a beauty host

1) Seeing yourself on video completely sans makeup is a humbling experience

2) My hands are bigger than my head. Or at least they look that way on camera.

3) Imagining you’re wrapped in big, fuzzy blanket in front of the fireplace creates the perfect ‘This primer feels SO good” expression.

4) The lighting in your office is the least flattering light you’ll ever be seen in. Ever.

5) I talk faster than the speed of sound. Today’s motto should be “good, now slow that down.”

More shooting to do, but I’ll make sure to post the videos here when I’ve finished editing them!

My First Fashion Week

It’s finally happening. I am attending my very first Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. *swoon x10*

My dreams of entering the fashion world go back so far that I can’t even remember a time when “Anna Wintour” wasn’t a part of my personal lexicon, and the same goes for Fashion Week. As far as I’m concerned, “tents” have only ever referred to one specific thing and let me tell you, it’s not camping. Trying to pin point when I first learned what Fashion Week was, is like trying to remember life before I could read.  That must have sucked, right?

My fabulous company, AmazingCosmetics, is sponsoring two shows at Fashion Week this year and I will be there running all sorts of backstage craziness. Specifically I will be directing our photographer, shooting “step-by-step” videos of how to get the runway looks with our fabulous lead artist Rudy Miles, and herding my 3 lovely bosses around the Step & Repeat and through press. It’s going to be a lot of work and I am thrilled. Not only will I be in NYC, but I’ll be backstage at Fashion Week and working with one of my dear friends from the j-school, our talented photographer, Charles Ludeke. (Check out his amazing work here) All of that and  the fact that I’ve been so busy at work I accidentally dropped a jean size this summer, woops! Could there BE better timing? I. think. not.

Before I leave there’s lots to do for prep work at Amazing, and appointments for lash extensions, a no-chip mani and a long over due pedicure to be made before I can walk within a mile of Lincoln Center in good conscience – can my pedicurist legally use a belt-sander on my heels? – but bottom line, I am beyond thrilled. I’ll be working plenty of course, but I’ll be trying to finesse my way into as many shows as possible in my downtime. JCrew and Michael Kors, I’m looking at you.

I’ll be tweeting and blogging my way through the next two weeks, so follow “career-girl-me” @AmazingCosmetic for the official backstage beauty and “real-girl-me” @skatebord for the less “pc” updates. I have a call with Rudy today to get the skinny on both runway looks so there will be news to follow shortly on my AmazingCosmetics blog, AmazingLand.

**Silly me- you are probably wondering what shows we’re doing! Uber-glamourous Zang Toi and the queen of dresses Sherri Hill. Kendall Jenner is walking for Sherri so I’ll definitely have Kardashian spottings for you.

Flashback: Charles and I at my senior sorority formal at Mizzou. That lavender suit? yes please.

Don’t worry, I promise I’ll be back! I’m about to start the major project of redecorating my old room to make it feel more like a swanky boudoir than my high school bedroom …only fitting now that I’m a college graduate… so I’ll have lots of pics, tips and probably mishaps to share. Until then, check me out at amazingcosmetics.wordpress.com

Tip of the day: Aspirin, not just for zapping headaches!

With mid-terms in full swing, packing on the brain and graduation looming only a few short weeks away, I’d say “stressed” is an understatement. For some people stress shows in their energy level or even their appetite but if you’re anything like me, it shows on your face. Now as a 21 year old, I can say that the days of acne are pretty far behind me (thankfully!), so I no longer have stockpiles of spot treatments at my disposal. Luckily, there’s a simple homemade remedy that works as well as any skin care counter cream I’ve tried… and the best part is, it’s sitting right in your medicine cabinet:  Aspirin! That’s right, painkillers like aspirin or ibuprofen are also anti-inflammatories, used to reduce swelling. That means that applying it topically to a persistent pimple will reduce swelling and redness, without drying out your skin.

How to use: Simply boil water and crush up a few tabs of aspirin to make a paste. Apply the paste to the blemish and let it dry. Voila! Your pesky pimple will be visibly smaller and the redness will subside without irritating the area from squeezing. Plus, unlike the pimple creams of our formative high school years, you won’t dry out your skin leaving a crackly mess underneath your concealer! This works great for those extra-annoying pressure-pimples too… ouch!

**If you’re short on time, you can simply run the pill underneath hot water and rub with your fingers to release its paste-y contents.

Now, if only eliminating the causes of my stress was as easy as getting rid of its effects. What are your favorite blemish beating remedies?

Sin City Survival Tip Cinco!!

Happy Tuesday everyone! Sorry it’s been so long since my last post (whoever said the second semester of your senior year in college should be easy, was misinformed).  Anyways, I’m back and ready with my fifth Sin City Survival Tip. With my trip to Las Vegas only 6 days away, it’s time to start thinking about what to pack. Suit case space is limited real estate as it is, but now with airlines charging up to $50 per checked bag, packing smart isn’t just a skill but a recessionista travel necessity!

For me, the biggest space-sucker in my suitcase always ends up being beauty products. Not only do you have to fit the usual lot of oddly shaped lotion bottles, giant hairspray canisters etc. But  when you add sunscreens, tanning oils and after-suns, it can get a little out of control. With this predicament in mind, I bring you

Tip #5: Products, what to pack and what to pitch! My packing rule is to stick to multi-use products and try to limit around 2 products per part, i.e. hair, face and body.

First, decide on two or three non-negotiables. For me these are:

Rusk Being Sexy Hairspray: Runway staple and the best hairspray for hot conditions that I have EVER used. Used at the Cynthia Rowley show in ’09 and my own Vegas trip in August, it has UV filters to protect from the sun, fights frizz and even adds shine!

Big Sexy Shampoo: When the heat is on, and it will be in Vegas (!), volume is always an issue for my hair. Big Sexy Shampoo guarantees that even if my root pump falters, I’ll never have helmet head.

Redken Straight Balm: Slick through your hair from about ear-height to ends before you blow dry to tame your mane all day… no matter the weather.

Secondly, when it comes to skin and suncare, keep it compact and kill 2 birds with 1 product.

SPF is not an option ladies. The “worn leather handbag” look doesn’t work for anyone’s skin type so take care of your face! However, packing skin care and sun care can get bulky. So the trick is finding one product for face and one for body that takes care of both.

For the face, I love  Neutrogena’s Ultra Sheer Sun Block. With SPF up to 85 (!) and its non-comedogenic formula, this fab product is sensitive enough to use as a moisturizer and strong enough to protect your delicate complexion. But, the best part about this block… the dry-touch technology keeps it matte and dry to the touch all day which means you won’t look greasy and your makeup won’t run! Apply in the morning underneath your makeup like a traditional moisturizer, then throw in in your pool bag and your good to go.

When it comes to body, there are multiple factors to consider. If you’re as pale as I am this spring, you’ll probably be getting a spray tan before your getaway; and everyone knows that even the best spray tans can turn into a flakey mess without proper maintenance. My lovely roommate and airbrush goddess Meredith, recommends a combination of moisturizer and self tanner. Burning will also jeopardize your golden glow and cause you to peel faster so again, SPF is a must! To solve this issue I turn to two products:

Jergens Natural Glow in Medium to Dark will take care of your body lotion and self tanner in one convenient bottle. You never have to worry about streaking and its suitcase-friendly bottle isn’t too big to travel with.

Hawaiian Tropic Tanning Oil with SPF 15 is a staple that I have used for years. When traveling to a dry destination like Las Vegas, your skin will dry out in no time while sunbathing. Tanning oils are super moisturizing and will safeguard your spray tan from the drying air and chlorine. With its convenient spray nozzle, you can reapply your SPF all day without getting your hands greasy and the sexy sheen will leave you looking like a bronze goddess.

With all of these great skin/sun care combos, you’ve already turned 5 big bottles into 3 convenient ones.

Size-down your essentials.

My personal goal is to fit my skin/sun care plus all of my essentials in one gallon sized zip-loc bag. To do this, I buy travel sized versions of whatever I can. Sure it’s a few extra dollars but checking an extra bag or going over on your luggage weight limit is way more expensive. For most people, essentials include: toothpaste, deodorant, body wash, shampoo etc. Most of these already come in travel sizes, however you can purchase empty bottles for as little as $0.50 to fill with your own faves. Another space and time saving tip is to pick up a pack of face cleansing cloths. You can fold these into even the smallest of toiletry bags, plus they practically cut wash time in half (which you’ll appreciate when your nights end at 6 am).

Pick one extra… make it good. Limit yourself to one non-essential product and make it worth it!

My ultimate, all time favorite extra is Michael Kors Leg Shine To Go. One glide of this miracle-stick over your legs, knees and ankles, and your bare legs will look sleek, luscious and runway ready. Not to mention, it matches my Michael Kors fragrance!

There you have it, 7 products to complete your beauty, skin, tanning and SPF regimen on vacation. Not quite rocket science, but definitely a space saving feat in my book!

Tune in tomorrow for my tips on how to do a full night out from dinner to dancing without breaking the bank! xoxo SS

And the winner is… me!

Just in time for the end of awards season, I was lucky enough to snag one myself!  Lisa F. my wonderful reader, teacher and mentor was kind enough to present me with this Beautiful Blogger Award! Lisa is my Capstone class instructor which means that usually, through no fault of her own, she is the woman behind all of my “stressed out” remarks. We all know it’s the class and not you Lisa!! Well, anyways it’s nice to know that someone out there other than my wonderful mother is reading this and that’s just fab! So now that I have this award, I have a few requirements to fulfill before I pass it on to other bloggers that I adore. First, make sure you check out Lisa’s blog. She’s an uber-talented and all around awesome Advertising Professional and one classy lady!

Now I have to share 7 things about me that you readers might not have known before… hmmm here goes!

1.  I love love love middle names. It has been my experience that middle names tend to be pretty revelatory about a person and it’s one of my favorite things to learn about someone! …in case you’re wondering, mine’s Kate

2. I am a product junkie. A makeup artist of 5 years now and intern at a fabulous makeup company I have cabinets and drawers overflowing with spritzes, serums, creams and compacts. I’m lucky enough to have gotten lots of swag over the years and I can never bear to part with a great product!

3. Music makes my world go ’round. I believe that life should have a soundtrack and I have spent 21 years perfecting mine. A good song says so much more than just it’s lyrics and has the amazing ability to touch people’s hearts. Music is something that was passed on to me by my mom, an amazing singer, songwriter and musician herself, and it is something that I love sharing with people! Coming from a musical family makes everything from holidays to rainy days that much better and I can’t imagine it any other way! I see as much live music as possible and I’m always up for a good show.

4. Sort of on that note, I am at my absolute happiest when I’m performing. Whether I’m singing, acting or miming for that matter, give me a stage and I jump at the opportunity to be smack dab in the middle of it!

5. I have an amazing family. We’re definitely not your traditional, nuclear, family unit, but we like it that way.

6. My all time favorite movie is White Christmas. Danny Kay, Rosemary Clooney and Bing Crosby are simply classic.

7. And for lucky number seven… my favorite time of day is around 3:30 when the sun is glowing orange and the whole world looks warm and happy like a cup of hot tea.

Now I’m supposed to name 15 blogs that I’m passing this award onto but I narrowed down to my fave 5. Here they are!

Teen Fashionista: Casey Lewis is friend of mine and fellow J-schooler. Meeting her Sophomore year and reading her delightful blog has always been my inspiration to start blogging. Sweet and bubbly with impeccable taste, reading Casey’s blog is like sipping a glass of sparkling lemonade… how can you not smile?

Cupcakes and Cashmere: Not like she needs an award from me, but Emily is my blog idol. I have been reading daily for I don’t even know how long and I’m constantly inspired by her refreshing personality and fabulous style. Plus I think we’re kindred home decor spirits… we have the same bedding and bed side furniture!

Daily Pep Talk From a Best Friend: In a world full of competition and cut throat colleagues (even in college!) it’s nice to feel like someone’s on your side. Reading Rachel’s blog is exactly what it says, a pep talk from a girl that feels like your best friend and the perfect positive start to my day.

Pretty Little Things: Love this site. They strike the perfect balance of classic and quirky to keep things refreshing, fun and all around pretty! The perfect pick me up to any drab day.

Lovely Homes: Exactly what the title says. I love being inspired and uber jealous of the beautiful rooms featured on this blog! Plus there are great DIY and recipes!

So there you have it! I’d like to thank the Academy for this award…. okay so maybe it’s not an Oscar but I sure feel like Sandra Bullock right now! PS– check back later for my fave fashions from the red carpet. *Ellie Saab, swoon*

Lady and Lauper, a MAC made in heaven

We all know girls just wanna have fun but now the Queen and Princess of Pop are pairing up and saying safety first!! Lady Gaga and Cyndi Lauper are teaming up with MAC AIDS Fund as the new faces of VIVA Glam to launch the From our Lips campaign. No strangers to controversy, we’ve loved to watch these two push the limits in song and style with their overt sexuality and twists on traditional gender roles. Now the pair want to help girls everywhere embrace their own sexuality and learn to keep their love lives seductive and satisfying but above all safe, with eyes open to the facts about HIV/AIDS.

The new From our Lips campaign will honor women living with the HIV/AIDS virus as well as those working to stop its spread. The Fund will announce $2.5 million in donations to model programs intended to address the vulnerabilities and inequities that leave women everywhere at an increased risk for HIV/AIDS. Both stars have created a custom lip shade for the cause and, for the first time in VIVA Glam history, the lipsticks are named for their creators and will bear their signatures scrawled on every tube. The stars hope that the lipsticks will become a vibrant and positive reminder to women everywhere to own their sexuality and practice safe sex.

In an interview with WWD, Gaga explained that she hopes to “create this mother-daughter energy, where mothers feel that they can buy the lipstick for their daughters — “Here’s your first lipstick, and let me explain to you what it means.’”

For all of her satirizing of fame, I love seeing Gaga step out to use her celebrity status for a good cause. “I love to use my fame to get other points across,” said Gaga to WWD, and we love when she does.

So in honor of these fabulous ladies, I’ve collected some adorable Valentine’s Day finds that will not only show your love to your sweetie, but spread the love to those living or working with HIV/AIDS… Let’s remember this Valentine’s Day to keep love alive, but above all safe!
